Admission Requirements
All applicants must meet the general entry requirements for their chosen programme. The baseline for most courses is:
- A year-end Grade 9 pass, or a higher certificate with English and Mathematical Literacy
- An NQF Level 1 qualification
- An approved bridging programme to NQF Level 2
- RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) to NQF Level 2
Specific programmes—especially engineering and business N4–N6—may ask for Grade 12 with relevant subjects. Check the course-specific requirements on the college website before applying.
Documents You’ll Need
Have certified copies of the following ready before you start the online form:
- Certified copy of your ID
- Certified copy of your latest school report or highest qualification
- Certificate of Good Behaviour from your previous school or workplace
- Certified copy of your parent or guardian’s ID
- A unique email address and an active cellphone number
How to Apply
- Choose your programme — Decide between NC(V), NATED, or an occupational qualification, and confirm which campus offers it.
- Gather your documents — Get everything certified at a police station or commissioner of oaths.
- Apply online — Go to the official application portal and create an account. You’ll need an email address to register.
- Apply for NSFAS separately — If your household income is R350 000 or less, apply at nsfas.org.za. NSFAS applications usually open between September and January.
You can also apply in person at the nearest Thekwini campus if you prefer, or if you have trouble with the online system.
A Few Practical Tips
- Apply early in the window — popular programmes like Electrical Engineering and Business Management fill up fast.
- Use an email address you check regularly; all communication about your application status comes through email and SMS.
- Double-check that your certified copies are still within the 3-month validity window most institutions require.
- Keep your application reference number once you submit — you’ll need it to track your status.
Thekwini’s online application portal removes the need for long queues and paper forms, but the burden is on you to have documents ready and meet the deadline. If the 2028 dates haven’t been published yet, checking the official site in August is the safest move.
