Joy Nwaeze: A Nigerian Advocate Inspiring Global Climate Action

Joy Nwaeze, a Nigerian climate policy advocate and corporate social responsibility expert, is making significant strides in how governments, organizations, and communities address climate change. As the founder of Africa Upcycle Community, a nonprofit dedicated to waste management, climate education, community development, and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) education across Africa, Joy’s work has already impacted over 60,000 people since 2019. Her journey is a powerful example of how personal experiences can fuel a lifelong commitment to environmental stewardship and community empowerment.

Growing up, Joy faced firsthand the difficulties of living without consistent access to clean water. For nearly two decades, the daily task of fetching water and carrying it on her head was a reality. This, coupled with her observations of how waste was carelessly discarded in her community, sparked a deep curiosity about environmental issues and a desire to find solutions. By 2018, her research into environmental challenges led her to volunteer with various nonprofit organizations.

Her first significant leadership opportunity arose from a Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) service event. Here, she was empowered to develop and implement her own project. Joy gathered volunteers to educate students about climate change and responsible waste management. During this event, she showcased a skirt made from old newspapers, demonstrating the potential of transforming waste into useful items. She also provided materials to the host school, encouraging students to embrace recycling and upcycling. This initial project, focused on repurposing discarded materials, became the foundation for her extensive work in environmental education. She continued to take on leadership roles with Rees Africa, serving in positions such as secretary, team lead, and state lead. In 2021, she established Africa Upcycle Community to further her mission of educating people about environmental concerns, influencing policy, and helping communities adapt to climate change.

Africa Upcycle Community: Addressing Environmental Challenges

Africa Upcycle Community, under Joy Nwaeze’s leadership, spearheads projects in various African nations, with a particular focus on communities most vulnerable to climate-related issues. The organization’s multifaceted approach encompasses waste management, climate education, corporate governance, community development, and WASH education. Through its diverse programs, Africa Upcycle Community educates individuals on environmental protection, promotes responsible waste disposal practices, and equips communities with practical skills for reusing discarded materials.

A core aspect of Joy’s work involves empowering women and young people. She supports them in acquiring valuable skills, actively participating in environmental initiatives, and having a voice in decisions that affect their communities. Since 2019, her efforts have reached more than 60,000 individuals. Her ambitious goal is to extend this reach to an additional 4,000 people by 2027. Beyond direct community engagement, Joy actively collaborates with policymakers and other stakeholders. She advocates for governments to incorporate the lived experiences of communities most impacted by climate change into their policy development processes.

Global Recognition and Policy Influence

Joy Nwaeze’s expertise has led to her being consulted on climate policy discussions involving three European governments. In these engagements, she has provided crucial perspectives from the Global South to parliamentary bodies. Her work also extends to collaborations with international organizations, including UNESCO, on critical issues concerning climate change and youth engagement. She is recognized as one of 24 UNESCO Global Youth Trainers and currently contributes to the advisory team of the UNESCO Youth Climate Action Network.

As a sought-after public speaker, Joy has accepted over 30 invitations to speak at events across five continents. Her presentations focus on climate policy, environmental protection, and the vital role young people play in addressing the climate crisis. Through these platforms, she has effectively highlighted the challenges faced by communities struggling with limited access to clean water, inadequate waste management systems, and other pressing environmental problems. Her ability to connect global policy discussions with grassroots realities makes her a powerful advocate for change.

Navigating Challenges and Learning from Experience

The journey of leading a nonprofit organization like Africa Upcycle Community is not without its hurdles. One of Joy’s most significant challenges is securing adequate funding. Implementing and expanding community projects requires substantial resources, and consistently obtaining sufficient financial support remains an ongoing effort. To overcome this, Joy actively applies for grants and seeks partnerships with organizations willing to support the community’s activities.

Another considerable challenge Joy addresses is the frequent exclusion of young people from crucial climate policy discussions. She firmly believes that young individuals, who will ultimately bear the long-term consequences of these decisions, must be consulted when governments formulate climate change strategies. To counter this, she actively encourages young people to educate themselves about their countries’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs). She also promotes monitoring government commitments and raising concerns when progress falls short.

Language differences have also presented obstacles when working in diverse communities where multiple languages are spoken. To ensure effective communication and participation, Africa Upcycle Community works with interpreters. These experiences have underscored the importance of seeking support, fostering collaboration, and developing practical strategies to navigate the complexities of running a nonprofit organization. Each challenge overcome provides valuable lessons that strengthen the organization’s resilience and impact.

Future Vision: Expanding Reach and Empowering Communities

Joy Nwaeze’s future plans are centered on continuing her advocacy for climate action, contributing to policy development through written papers, and expanding projects that support women, young people, and communities affected by environmental issues. A key focus is the enhancement of her organization’s training programs. These programs aim to equip individuals with practical skills, particularly in transforming waste materials into valuable products, thereby creating income-generating opportunities.

One of her upcoming initiatives is the Waste-to-Craft Train-the-Trainer Programme, scheduled for October 31, 2026. This program is designed to train participants in upcycling techniques and empower them to become trainers themselves, multiplying the impact of the skills taught. Joy envisions a future where she continues to collaborate closely with governments, international organizations, and local communities. Her goal is to refine climate policies and create more avenues for young people to actively participate in decisions shaping their future. This forward-looking approach ensures that Africa Upcycle Community remains at the forefront of environmental advocacy and community empowerment.
